Not today. But it isn’t. At least, most of it isn’t. There are bits and pieces here and there that are, but most of it is just people making wild guesses, which in time get enshrined as fact. Note that I said psychiatry, not psychology – there are branches of psychology that are quite scientific indeed. But psychiatry isn’t even up to the standards of medicine in general, let alone other science. In my book, psychiatry should be scrapped and reworked from the ground up with no assumptions. Parts would become part of existing disciplines like neurology and cognitive neuroscience. Others would end up in disciplines that don’t even exist yet. And others would probably disappear altogether. But as it is now, not even close to a science, not overall as a whole, Only a few lucky parts could get the designation as properly scientific and that’s almost an accident of history.
