I am not a Christian, and I have gotten rid of most of the Christmas supplies and decorations that people have bought me over the years. But I can’t get rid of this nativity scene. It means too much to me.
It’s pretty much common knowledge these days that Jesus was brown, not white, by today’s standards. I had to search far and wide before I found a nativity scene that reflected the actual likely appearance of his family. Even the angel is brown! (I really hate the implications of angels always being white, blonde, and blue eyed. And when parents say their children look like angels because they have pale skin and blonde curly hair or something. It makes me nauseated.)
Anyway, I have kept this despite no longer being a Christian, because representation of Jesus as he actually probably looked is so scarce, and given that he is The Major Religious Figure in the society around me, it means something to have representation that isn’t White Jesus.
