“They told me that…my mom didn’t want me anymore and that nobody really cared” -Lakota foster child, now reunited. This is a heartbreaking quote from a Lakota child, who has now been reunited with his mother after many years spent apart. This is just one of many stories about the separation of Lakota children from their families. There are many stories of grandparents being denied as legal guardians for their grandchildren by the South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) in favor of non-native homes and in direct violation of the Indian Child Welfare act of 1978. If there are relatives that are capable of taking care of the children, they have the right to be their legal guardians! Additionally, children have been taken away from their parents on unproven accounts of neglect. Poverty does not equal neglect and Lakota children should not be stripped from their parents because of it! These are just a few summaries out of many stories by Lakota families, and each one is truly devastating.
