“Kagan’s Law of First Contact: You’ll surprise you more than they will.”
—Janet Kagan, Uhura’s Song (a Star Trek book)
Yes I know there’s an original character who flags every Mary Sue trait in existence. I don’t care. I refuse to apologize for loving this book or for having fantasized about being that character as a preteen. Anyway she’s not the point. The above quote is. I just wanted to mention this in case the fandom police descend on me.
I think this quote applies to all situations, not just cultural ones, where at least two people from different backgrounds meet and sincerely try to get to know and understand each other. You’ll expect to find the other person’s ways surprising, but then you’ll do and say things that surprise yourself and put your own background into new perspective.
