“Perhaps for you the hum of a vacuum cleaner is a nuisance to be ignored or forgotten. For me, life is a living symphony of sound, each infinitely satisfying and curious, worthy of attention and remembrance.”

— Craig Romkema, “Listener”, from Embracing the Sky: Poems Beyond Disability

I’m enough of a cat to be like mrrroow no.

I hate vacuum cleaner noises. But this is his perspective, not mine, and I felt intrusive by putting my own thoughts into it. Not that you shouldn’t. But it’s, an example of positive stuff I missed in this book last time around because I was too steeped in autistic community dogma to register anything positive at all. As soon as I realized he hated being autistic and saw autism as separate from himself, my mind snapped shut and I missed passages like that one.
