“My name is Christine and I am a 21-year-old female living with autism. This is probably one of the few books about autism written by one of my gender or an individual living with autism for that matter. A lot of the books out there are written in the second person by professionals and parents of the autism community. That being the case, I couldn’t find one single autism book I could relate to. These books are not written in the first person. Instead, the writers are usually conveying the perspective of their children and or clients. Therefore the inaccuracies are many.”

Christine Motokane, Working the Double Shift: A Young Woman’s Journey with Autism

This makes me sad and angry. There’s one way her being a published autistic author really is unusual and that’s that she’s a woman of color. But female? Not unusual. Autistic? Not unusual. I have over 150 books by autistic people I think, and at least 80 more on my Amazon wish list. I am sad and angry because someone must have actively kept those books from her. If she had been able to do her own research she would’ve more likely found the 200+ books by autistic people that I’ve found so far. This pisses me off. She felt she had to write a book to fill a gap that doesn’t exist. I am glad she wrote it but I wish she knew the truth.
