The good news is that my computer is back.
The bad news is it cost my brother a lot of money to have it fixed. Because even though I’ve been extra careful to take care of it (given that I destroyed my last one doing something truly stupid, and my brother paid for the replacement and I hate feeling beholden to people over money issues), Apple still insisted that I must have been, I don’t know, throwing it at the floor or something? Because they said there was all this damage that voided the warranty, and that I’d have to pay a $600 flat rate to reinstate the warranty so they could do the repairs.
The other good news, though? Once that flat rate was paid, they found all kinds of things wrong with my computer that would’ve cost far more than $600 to fix. So they basically gave it such a thorough overhaul that the technician at my local store (not an Apple Store, just an authorized dealer/repair shop) said that he’d never seen anyone get so much mileage out of the $600 flat rate before.
So thank you, again, Shane, this has really helped out, and I got my computer back just before a writing deadline that I was kind of despairing about being able to make. Because while I sometimes like to write using my iPad (which is also broken, I’ve been using a loaner for communication-device purposes – my iPad broke, then I replaced it because it cost less than repairing it, then I was sitting on the toilet with the new one, really exhausted, fell asleep, and woke up with my new iPad on the floor with the screen shattered, so now I’m waiting for a screen to come in from China so they can replace it… and this is the other reason I needed help paying for my computer, because I’d actually gotten a check for about $600 for overpaid rent and my security deposit, but I spent it all on iPad replacement/repair.) Anyway to start that sentence over – while sometimes I really like writing on my iPad, I still type fastest on my laptop, and so now I’ll have a chance of meeting that deadline.
Plus this is much better for the text-based part of my AAC stuff. My iPad still works better for the picture-symbol-based one.
Anyway the only thing I really wish had gone differently, is that… I really don’t think there was anything I did to this computer that truly voided the warranty, and I don’t think I should’ve gotten stuck with the bill, nor should my brother have, even though he’s always been incredibly generous to me about computer stuff.
