Tumblr/Facebook dissonance: the ongoing story

alliecat-person:

I think I’ve made it pretty clear that I’m not okay with nastiness in the name of social justice. There are certain circles on this site who have cultivated a set of social norms so warped that they basically condone abuse.

This is really shitty, and spending a lot of time on Tumblr can lead one to believe that the erosion of basic social conduct in crusades for justice is the biggest problem with online discourse. But, on the other side of the coin, in other forums there are a lot of people at the other extreme. These people tend to interpret even judiciously worded criticisms as “anger” and “hate,” and it’s extraordinarily tiresome. Especially for someone who hasn’t entirely given up on trying to persuade the more reasonable and open-minded among them.

Through my frustrations with these people—let’s call them the Facebook crowd—it’s a lot easier to emphasize with Tumblr users who regularly and liberally use terms such as “tone policing,” “gaslighting,” etc.

Aside from my fantasy of forcing these two groups to interact with each other as a mutual punishment, I’m not sure what’s to be done about this, though.
