Hi. My name’s Justine. I’m 23, I’m a student at UNC Charlotte, studying Public Advocacy. I am both the Vice-President of the Feminist Union and the President of the Transgender Support Group on campus. And I’m drowning.

It feels like 2014 never really ended. It feels like I didn’t free myself from my emotionally and financially abusive ex-boyfriend. It feels like I’ll have to go back to him because I won’t be able to survive. 

A few days ago, in the mail, I recieved this:

A 1200 medical bill I received after admitting myeslf to the ER, having experienced what’s known as a Transient ischemic attack (or Mini-Stroke) after volunteering at Charlotte, North Carolina’s LGBTQ Pride Festival. 

This is a massive slap in the face, as I have only recently become settled into a home after experiencing homelessness during my fall semester at UNC Charlotte.

I do not have the money to pay this right now. I’m worried about paying rent by the end of this month. I’m worried about affording the rest of my transition. I’m worried about surviving my own dysphoria, much less hunger and homelessness.
