Saw a quote today that was like “be the kind of person that if anyone said anything bad about you no one would believe it” and I just kind of have to laugh because have you met human beings before? You could be the nicest person in the world and there’d still be people out there slandering you because of some bullshit reason, and people believing it.

Seriously.

Like I’m not even close to perfect enough to be universally liked.  (In fact, the vast majority of people who are universally liked get there by not having opinions openly, which isn’t possible for my survival.)

But yes most of the slander and libel I’ve endured has been totally or near-totally divorced from anything I’ve actually done.  (Near-totally means the way they manipulate half-truths or even whole truths to make them sound like I did something Really Bad.  Most of the Really Bad things I did boil down to being a teenager with undiagnosed autistic catatonia searching for an identity that fit me in a world where only two papers existed on my condition and my shrinks, even the ones who recognized autism, didn’t know about it.  Oh and also being misdiagnosed and pressured to act as if I had things I didn’t have.  That’s all.  But they make it sound like that makes me a criminal.  Meanwhile, their stalking and death threats among other things aren’t criminal, not at all.

This is why I don’t believe identity-policing sorts of libel without a damn good reason, and I can count the damn good reasons I’ve ever encountered on less than one hand.  I’d rather believe in a fake person than disbelieve a real one.  The damage is so much crueler in the second one.   And the bystanders who go on to believe the libel only help people who want me dead, whether they realize (or care) that this is the objective, or not.
