“My Contaminated Smile” by Joe Ehman, from Mouth Magazine. This is a guy who the MDA made “Person of the Year”. He went to Mouth Magazine intending to striaghten them out about the MDA. They didn’t have much time so they dropped a bunch of papers in his lap. He read them all. When he started asking too many questions, they stripped him of his Person of the Year status.
But the above-linked post isn’t about that. it’s about that smile that helping professionals cultivate, and what’s behind it. I could’ve told you what’s behind a lot of it (I can sense disgust, revulsion, impatience, condescension, and “I don’t really like disabled people but I wanted the job…” a mile away). But he tells it better, because back when he was nondisabled he worked in ahospital and used The Smile all the time.
