Oppositional Behavior [title is a writing prompt]

Shame that I’m not trustworthy enough
To ever be left alone

Shame that outside my control
My hands automatically
Opened the door
Of a car moving 70 miles an hour
Down the interstate

Understand I had no death wish
No desire to scare anyone
Or cause an accident
I made her use the child locks

My hand came into contact
With the handle on the door
Handles were made for hands
Or they’d be called footles or something

So my hand grasped the handle
And opened the door
And they may call it oppositional behavior
But they have never had a body
That functioned on a subconscious automatic level

And opened any door
Just because it was nearby
And opened and shut drawers
And turned knobs
And pushed buttons
And in general reacted to objects
As if they told them,
“Open me, close me, push me, twist me, pull me.“

So for a last thought
Look at the above video
This is not oppositional behavior
This is the behavior of an autie
Who has learned to function in the world
By reacting to objects As if the objects contained instructions
There is nothing oppositional about that
Even if it puts people in danger
I don’t like it any more than they do
Despite being the one doing it

I try my hardest not to
And I’ve made progresss
Maybe you can try your hardest
Not to judge motivation
By surface appearances
