Always ask to touch someone. Do not assume because they are sad or angry they automatically want physical comfort.

This also goes the other way.  I once asked a teachrr why she hugged everyone in the class when they had a har  time, except me.  (I was on enough meds that it brought my pain level low enough for hugging to be non-horrible.)

She said, “I’d have never have known you’d want a hug.  You’ve got a don’t touch me vibe about you, all the time.”

 It’s weird… I spent most of my life tolerating hugs because I didn’t know it was possible not to.  And then when I finally wanted them, people said I looked like I didn’t.  I do not understand how people decide who looks like they want hugs and who dosen’t.

So.  Yes.  Ask.  Always.  Even when you think the person doesn’t want to be touched.  You’d be surprised
