Sometimes Lovette gets all playful and then when I don’t play with him he flops onto his side and looks despondent

Oh no. I hate that feeling more than any other in the world, I think . Both of us have chronic pain, but it’s hard to explain to a cat “You know how you don’t always want to be touched or bothered because your leg hurts so bad? That’s how I feel right now, because I’m exhausted, in horrible pain, and nauseated. And even though you’re an old lady in cat years, you can still outrun me easily through speed, size, and agility. I can’t keep up. I’m terribly sorry.”
