I didn’t add that before, but maybe my favorite variation of “focus on one thing you said, to the exclusion of anything else” is when the other person will latch onto minute details of phrasing rather than the actual content of what you were saying.

And usually twist it around into some totally different meaning. Then, of course, get angry if you act even a fraction as frustrated as you feel, and/or try to point out that that was not what you meant at all. Even if you have the self-control not to point out that they bloody well know it.

But, it’s a neat way of derailing a discussion, and dismissing what the other person has to say.

That’s before we even get to the often related tone/facial expression derailing. :-|

This kind of crap is no doubt frustrating for people who don’t have disabilities that come out in all of those areas. Especially evident under stress. It can be extra fun if you do, though.
