I finally figured out how to deal with my dad’s crocheted hat.
I’d sent him a crocheted hat to keep his head warm in case his hair thinned out during cancer treatment, and he wore it all the time. After he died, my mom sent it back. It was the only hat I was uncomfortable getting back. Not because my mom did anything wrong in sending it back, but because it felt more final. He would never have sent me a hat I made him unless he was truly dead.
I’ve had trouble wearing it. So I decided to crochet some designs of my own onto it, in orange and maybe yellow, so that it’s partly his hat (blue to match his eyes) and partly my hat (other colors and designs that I would want on it). I’m still in the middle of crocheting the orange yarn onto it and it’s working really well so far. I might do an orange and yellow flower or something at the very top.
