Melatonin!
[Image Description: Picture of my hand holding a bottle of Melatonin tablets. It says: SOURCE NATURALS Dietary Supplement Melatonin orange flavored sublingual, for occasional sleeplessness, 5 mg, 50 tablets.]
This is currently the only genuine sleep aid I’ve been prescribed by a doctor. I take it when I go to bed (that’s when I use the prescription liquid in my j-tube) and also sometimes if I can’t go back to sleep after being woken up for my 3 am meds (that’s when I use what I’ve bought myself, but I cleared it with a doctor).
I’m sharing this discovery because it was exactly that, a discovery. I’ve used Source Naturals before because a doctor told me they’re pretty reliable, unlike some “natural medicine” companies. Like when it says 5 mg you’re getting 5 mg.
I had been using, prior to this, expensive liquid formulations such as Sundown Naturals and Natrol. I assumed I had to, because they go easily into a feeding tube. Crushing up tablets into a feeding tube is a good way to kill a feeding tube.
But then I remembered why I knew about Source Naturals. Years ago, I had a jackass therapist who said I would not be an adult until I could beat a severe circadian rhythm sleep disorder with willpower alone. Another doctor suggested melatonin in addition to the willpower. ;-)
Anyway, that melatonin melted under your tongue. And it worked really well for me. So I went on Amazon and found that 50 tablets was around $7.50 USD and that they have a service where you subscribe and they automatically charge you and deliver it once a month. You can also get larger amounts per bottle if your prescription is for more. (You don’t need a script to order it though, I just go by what my doctor says because there’s too much potential for med interactions.)
So if you need relatively cheap melatonin that melts in your mouth and doesn’t require swallowing pills (it’s absorbed through the membranes in your mouth, you just stick it under your tongue and move it around a bit to keep from irritating one spot). And if you want the convenience of having it delivered once a month. Then you could do worse than look this stuff up.
