Plot twist: someone thought to be illiterate and not absorbing much academically finally gets AAC support when they’re 12. They’re missing basic information about the world because they spent so long unable to ask questions. It turns out they really don’t know how to read, and really haven’t been able to get much out of school. They’re nowhere near on grade level. New possibilities have been opened up by their communication system, and things are still hard and complicated.
