since tourette’s awareness month starts next week (May 15 - June 15) i should try and clear some stuff up about us! (heres a small source!)

• we cannot help our tics; only suppress them for a short period of time. this can cause some people physical pain if they hold back for too long (like me!) the urge is like an itch; the more you ignore it the worse it gets.
  
• we all don’t cuss! that’s a vicious stereotype that needs to be ended; and only less than 10% of us have it. it’s called coprolalia
  
• there are two different kind of tics; vocal and motor. vocal is speech; motor is physical
  
• people with penises are 3-5x more likely to have tourettes than those with vaginas (because ppl with ts can be trans too; also like me!)
  
• tourettes is like a married couple. if you have tourettes, you have an 80% chance of having other disorders - such as add, adhd, ocd, anxiety, sensory disorders, and dysgraphia/dyslexia.
  
• there is currently no cure for tourettes and there are no drugs out there for treatments (other than medical marijuana; however this isnt available to everyone) 
  
• ts is a neurological disorder with no known cause (it is thought to be genetic and/or a bad connection of the circuits connecting the brain’s cortex and subcortex
  

please keep this in mind this month! we rarely get recognition, and when we do; we’re often made fun of. pls support your local friend with tourette’s

But some of us do cuss and that’s okay. It’s not just cussing it’s all emotionally volatile words. Like I love you, I hate you, slurs, etc. and one in ten is actually quite a lot of people.
