Above is me, Paige, as well as my cats: Seti (top), Chani (left), and Geordi (right). Not pictured is my mother, Dawn. We’ve been struggling month to month for over a year to keep a roof over our heads, and to stay fed and as healthy as possible. Both my mother and I are disabled. I have ME, fibromyalgia, Celiac disease, and a few other conditions. My mother, a nurse, has excruciating arthritis, and recently lost almost all of the fingers on her left hand from a spider bite. Dawn is waiting on a SSDI decision and I am trying to apply. In the meantime, she cannot work, and I am only able to work about 10 hours a week. I’m an academic by trade, but I’m currently doing odds jobs for odd pay, as well as running an Etsy store, The Sibilant Shoppe (x). I am not making enough to support us.
We’ve only made it this far because of the wonderful people who have donated. My mother’s father is unwilling to help us, and he changed his phone number so we cannot ask again. My father’s side is not wealthy. The Salvation Army has repeatedly been unable/refused to help. We’ve gotten some help from church groups, etc., but this is never promised.
Making rent every month is a battle. We have food stamps, but that doesn’t help with toiletries or food for the cats. Seti is my emotional support animal, and they all are beloved family members. My mother has epilepsy, and absolutely MUST take her seizure medication or risk seizures. She is currently uninsured. Because we’re disabled, medications add up quickly.
