just gonna make this post for all my fellow uk followers.. from tomorrow (30/6) until thursday (2/7) temperatures are expected to soar into a heatwave with temperatures up to 35°C. At this point many people are in danger of overheating causing possible hospitalisation and even death. These people are seen to be the most at risk:
- older people, especially those over 75
- babies and young children
- people with a serious chronic condition, especially heart or breathing problems
- people with mobility problems – for example, people with Parkinson’s disease or who have had a stroke
- people with serious mental health problems
- people on certain medications, including those that affect sweating and temperature control
- people who misuse alcohol or drugs
- people who are physically active – for example, labourers or those doing sports
please PLEASE take care of yourself and your family/friends! drink plenty of water and stay out of the sun between 11am-3pm. and please check up on any vulnerable people you know!
also PLEASE do not leave your dogs in the car! a story emerged today of a dog in europe left in a hot car for FOUR hours which later died of internal bleeding. it’s best either to take your dog out of the car with you or not take it out at all!
note: before anyone from another country starts with the “oh that’s nothing here we have temperatures higher than that all the time” - friendly reminder that here in the uk, the average temperature in summer 2014 was 14.8°C. our climate is NOT very warm and we are not used to these kinds of temperatures - people can and DO die in this weather (usually elderly/infant and the vulnerable), so please don’t mock us
#that last point is so important #our buildings especially are built to keep IN heat #and air con is literally pretty much only a thing in (newer) hotels #hell even things like fans and keeping windows open don’t help much because house designs have very poor air flow (because of the heat retention) #temperature isn’t some universal thing ( via pressxtodavid )
added reminder to be careful walking your dogs in this heat! especially if the pavement is too hot for you to touch with your bare hands for more than a few seconds. make sure all your pets have lots of water too.Helpful summer tips:
-Summer Depression is a legit thing. It’s like the reverse of SAD. If you find yourself losing weight, getting super angry/stressed, and struggling to perform basic tasks, you could be prone to summer depression
- Put ice cubes in your pet’s water! It helps!
- Put a drop of Olbas Oil in a squirt bottle of water, and spritz yourself (avoiding your eyes). It makes you feel super refreshed
- Leave a damp towel down for your cat or dog to lay on if they need to cool off. If your pet is weird like my cat Gerard, just drape the towel on them if they’re struggling with the heat
- Put fruit like kiwi, strawberries, and raspberries in the freezer for an icy snack
- If your kitchen doesn’t have good ventilation, avoid using your hob. Knock together simple food like salads and sandwiches
- If you have short hair, be aware of scalp sunburn because it sucks ass. If your hair isn’t quite short enough to just smear your head in sun cream, get someone to apply it along the parting and hairline with a cotton bud
- If you wear makeup, invest in shine control sheets so you can blot your sweat without fucking up your foundation
- Wear cotton underwear. And proper sports socks with a wicking effect. Trust me.
People saying “lol that’s nothing we’re used to it” are being awful. It’s people who are not used to it (and their pets) who are at the most risk.
I know tons of people who don’t balk at snowy winters at all. That doesn’t mean people here are safe in them – we have no idea what the hell is going on and, say, may well not own sufficient warm things.
A heat wave over there is the same thing. Stay safe and hydrated! :-)
