(((*smol jewish voice* does anyone have any recs for torah study apps/websites??)))
I would appreciate signal boosts on this!!
sorry this is so long…
good places to find source texts:
- sefaria.org has basically any text you could ever want. it has a really cool feature in the Tanach sections where it has a scrolling bar of commentaries on that section. the downside is that as you get more obscure (move out of Tanach and into Talmud or Midrash or Halacha) it gets less and less likely to have the text in English.
- chabad.org has a less exhaustive, but still really broad, selection of texts. they’re all translated. their Tanach is lovely because it has the hebrew with the english (which there’s also an option for in sefaria, to be fair) and there’s a button to show Rashi’s commentary (in both English and Hebrew)
- for the Talmud (although it has other books as well), i like mercava because you hover your mouse over a line of the aramaic text and it translates into English at the bottom for you (not everything is translated, sadly) - i want to keep my connection to & try to build a familiarity with the original aramaic. unfortunately, it doesn’t have any of the commentaries, but i’ve yet to find any place online in English which does.
- for the Talmud only: dafyomi.co.il - once you click through to the name of a masechet (the words in blue) you get a table of options. click “point by point” (with a picture of some pencils in a pot) and you get taken to a table of dafs. click on the one you’re trying to learn about or check a source from, eg 7b, and it will take you to a neatly organised translation of that daf. downsides are it uses a lot of untranslated Hebrew terms, and the website design isn’t beautiful.
- for the Talmud only: come-and-hear. somewhat archaic text, unbeautiful website design, but clearly phrased and more translated than dafyomi.
good places to find written divrei Torah (essays about an element of the Torah, often that week’s portion):
- parshanut - right here on tumblr, translates everything into English but brings in Hebrew as well, and i really like the way their divrei Torah are written
- chabad.org (are you sensing a theme?) - literally stuffed with divrei Torah. useful and easy to read. they can be of differing standard and level of learning required/provided sometimes.
- i really like hardcoremesorah on the weekly parsha, although it can run a little long for some people
- pinkasot and moderntoraleadership - basically the same disclaimers as mechon hadar. i really like the writing styles. the latter in particular can often focus a lot on a particular sociological trend in modern orthodox judaism, which isn’t so interesting for someone who isn’t in those circles.
good places to find audio shiurim (speeches about an element of the Torah):
- i really like mechon hadar, but they aren’t for everyone because they have a particular outlook (modern Orthodox) and they come from a position of quite high jewish literacy. i can’t remember if they fully translate or not, but they usually assume a fair amount of familiarity with the sources and concepts. by all means give it a try, but don’t be disheartened if it’s not for you.
the rest of these audio shiurim are ones i can’t endorse cause i don’t often listen to audio shiurim, but others say they’re good:
- TorahAnytime (also available in app form)
- SimpletoRemember
- AishAudio
- TorahMedia
- Classic Sinai
- LearnTorah
- yutorah.org
- webyeshiva.org
- chabad.org
- rabbisacks.org/ (also has a divrei Torah section)
followers, feel free to add! i hope this was helpful, angst420, and tizki l’mitzvot; may you merit to do more mitzvot!
I LOVE AlephBeta.org for weekly parsha videos. Very engaging and fun to watch.
