[Painting of a cat. The background is complex and mostly involves red/orange and blue/purple on top of each other, some in swipes back and forth and others in small squiggles. The cat is a stylized calico cat, white everywhere but splotches of orange and black on her face and paws. She is lying down and stretching in a way that gives her a bit of an inverted U shape. One of her front paws is curled, the other splayed. Her overall manner is one of unabashed, contagious joy.]

This is one of the few paintings I have done inspired by a photograph, called Temple Cat Stretching (that link goes to the photo) by tanakawho on flickr. The photo is much the same only of course it shows every detail of the cat instead of being a stylized representation.

The real cat this depicts lives in the garden of a temple in Tokyo with several other cats. I chose to paint her because had never seen a photo showing so much joy in a single cat. I look at the photo often because her happiness makes me happy.
