[Me as a little kid standing with one foot on one big redwood and the other foot on a second one.]

I completely took trees like this for granted when I was little. I mean I enjoyed them but I didn’t realize how amazing they were because they were everywhere. I used to wish I lived someplace cool where they had fossils like in books I read. My friend grew up in a place where you could find tons of fossils everywhere and thought it was nothing special. But she found redwoods new and exciting.

We lived in a redwood forest when I was born and these days redwoods are almost the only thing that make me wish I could handle living in California. I miss the trees and the rocks in the coast range and the Sierras, even though I don’t miss the people or culture of the Bay Area. Being away from there reminds me how much the landscape stamped itself onto my being without my even noticing. It’s now part of me wherever I go.
