lightofevolution: Steve Sillett (et al) mapped Iluvatar (a Tolkien reference) a very large, old redwood tree. The way that these trees grow is fascinating! See how some of the branches ‘fuse’ back into the main trunk:   [A sketch of the redwood Iluvatar. It looks like lots of trees.] In case you’ve never heard of this – this is all one tree. This is that iteration process I showed with the Mother Tree, taken so far that there’s over 200 trunks that are all the same tree. Some of their branches grow out and fuse back into the main trunk to support themselves better.
