[Photo: A part of my hand in front of a piece of paper. Both the hand and the paper are covered in various shades of blue paint.]
I have this odd thing going on with paintbrushes.
In watercolors, I’m slowly learning to make paintbrushes do my bidding in ways that aren’t completely clumsy and vague and annoying.
In acrylics, as with oils, it’s not happening. My attempted oil paintings always looked nothing like I intended. (So much so that an asshole art teacher took to doing my paintings for me as a kid. I was the only kid in the entire class she did this to.) Sometimes other people liked them but I always hated them.
So a few years ago I decided to try acrylic painting with my fingers instead. And suddenly I had all the hand control I wanted and more. And I found that I could paint that “feel” of things that I could never get to in words. Something about moving hands instead of something attached to them. And the style ends up completely different than with watercolors too.
Maybe it’s something about the paint texture. I don’t know. But I like having the option to say things I could never say before. Especially since words are more irritating than ever.
