➸ Welcome 2 my Mind: Why I Don't Mind The Categorization of Disability Sometimes
Ok, this is just really quick and will be edited in the morning but all this talk about how High Functioning Vs. Low Functioning (primarily in Autism) has been getting a bad rap lately. Now, I know there is a lot going into this and I see both sides ( I really do) I don’t really understand how…
I may make more parts of this later but here is a link to part 1 of my response. I don’t think it’s possible to know all sides to this because there’s more than two sides and a huge number of different motivations even among people who appear to be on the same side. For instance, some people don’t like functioning levels because they don’t want to acknowledge how diverse autistic people are, others don’t like them because there’s little good scientific evidence, others don’t like it because it doesn’t fit with how they experience autism, and tons more reasons. (Unfortunately a lot of people think it’s the first reason for most of us. Which isn’t true but it certainly fits a few of us.)
Like I said, I am looking more into the different views of this. I am someone who lives with a few disabilities myself (CP.LD,ADHD and a health impairment) and have always wondered how things are classified. I have studied special ed and also worked in a special education camp and recreation program. This was just a blurb of a future, more detailed blog that I will be writing about how people classify all disabilities on a scale, and how that is helpful vs. hurtful and the only reason I talked mainly on Autism for that post example was the rise of people who do not have autism hating on the leveling. I know and value that high and low functioning are vastly debatable and situational. It is really too long for me to go into at this current post, but look forward to a more thorough research about the classification of all disability levels in the future.
Okay. I’ll be posting my views on the topic too (in my case autism specific – I have tons of other conditions but going into that is just too hard right now). I didnt mean to set it up as somehow totally disagreeing or something. Anyway I’ll look forward to your posts.
