People acting as if the only two beliefs regarding the DSM-V changes are “narrow the diagnostic criteria” vs. “keep Asperger’s and PDD-NOS as separate diagnoses”. And conflating the narrowed criteria with the removal of the two other
diseasesdisorders.And of course, I have no idea where I’m…
I’m seeing it too. I’m also seeing people going “Don’t panic, it’s just the NYT article” when I’ve been talking about this since long before the article or even hearing of the study existing. That’s not why I have a problem with it. I have a problem with it because except for that one thing about sensory stuff these criteria are even worse than the old ones. They’re moving further and further away from things that are more central to autism than the stuff they’re stressing. And they’re forcing people to have every single one of the social criteria, which is not how these things should work given how variable autism is. (And don’t even get me started on how they measure severity.)
