goldenheartedrose:

It sort of skeeves me out when people say that a person is a much younger age person living inside their actual age’s body.  For example, “oh, my autistic brother is a 5 year old living in a 10 year old’s body”.  That just, um, strikes me as terribly limiting, especially with the way that IQ tests are administered.

That really bothers me too.  Especially because I’ve actually had people say such things about me, often without bothering to get to know me. Like when I was hospitalized for one of my many intestinal blockages, and I heard one medical guy tell another that I had the cognitive functioning of an infant. WTF.  But even if someone does know me it’s not okay.

Plus I find it seriously offensive in general.  Mental age is a big part of the reason that people treat DD people like children and forbid us from marrying and having sex and picking our own friends and other rights that come with adulthood.  It seems really hard for people to get their head around the fact that a 30-year-old autistic or intellectually disabled person is exactly like a 30 year old autistic or intellectually disabled person – not like a 5-year-old nondisabled person. It amazes me the way society has absorbed these ideas as if they are factual rather than ridiculous abstractions that hurt people.

I agree, especially since there’s no scientific way you can actually measure mental age.
