Yay my doctor is a geek!
Which is what I’d been hoping for when I compiled a ridiculously thick pile of papers (both studies and stuff from books, and excluding the more useless, ridiculous, or dangerous stuff) on autism and movement disorders, annotated them heavily, and plonked them on the exam table. He started looking through them right away.
He’s of course aware of the basics about various movement disorders but not all the weird internal dynamics and stuff. And given that this one doesn’t even have a fully agreed upon name yet, he’s mostly been muddling along with not a lot of clue what he was dealing with. He also seemed glad that I’d already done the library research for him.
Oh and regarding what Julia said about one of the articles I found – totally agreed. I’ve been telling people for ages that autism is, at core, about perception, thinking, and movement (and the interplay of all that), not socialization, communication, and repetitive behavior. Lots of people don’t listen. Martha Leary and David Hill are wonderful people. I have talked to them a lot. David Hill announced at a conference I went to that he’s autistic himself and been diagnosed with “atypical early onset Parkinson’s” (the same as my great aunt – we don’t know if she was autistic, but she had the other diagnosis, she was born before autism was created as a category and ended up in the psych system). So he really knows this stuff from the inside.
And for now that’s all because it’s been a long day and I’m smelly (which is really irritating me, but I have to wait to tomorrow before someone can wash me) and tired.
