Random biology fact that the mushrooms made me think of:
All plants actually have symbiotic fungi at their roots. The fungi get “fed” a little sugar water by the plant, and in return they help the plant get the minerals out of the rock/soil they’re growing in.
(Most of the white fluff here is actually part of the plant root)
