got quirks?: So I was looking through a disability blog that I really admire

gotquirks:

because I really appreciate a “fuck you I’m not an inspiration” attitude. I do. I have one myself.

And I was going back AGES in their posts because, you know, I have nothing better to do…

And I got to a list on disability. It was a very long list, arguing why people with disabilities should be…

Yes this. I don’t have fibro (although all of my grandparents do). But I do have chronic pain. And I do get thoroughly sick of the attitude that says you have to scrutinize disabled people to make sure they really have something.

I just saw a video of people with developmental disabilities. Several people in wheelchairs. And all through the comments people were ragging on this one woman in a chair. Apparently if you are in a chair and don’t have obvious speech difficulty or obvious twisted body parts or something, then you must just be fat and lazy. Seriously they said this. (And honestly do any of these people realize that unless you have a really fast metabolism or a wasting disease or something, if you’re in a powerchair you’ll get fat. I’ve noticed that powerchair users seem to cluster around really thin or fat. But many people only take seriously the thin ones.)

And I see it all the time in comments. And everywhere. People looking at all of us with this eye for any detail that doesn’t fit their ideas of what a disabled person looks like. And then, boom, they’re lazy and faking. Because everyone wants to be disabled, right? Or something. Anyway that mentality pisses me off in all its forms because it’s responsible for too much damage.
