I'M A SHAM: People like this are so frustrating.

“I know a lot about mental and physical disabilities (including Autism). They do hold people back. We have 10-12 mentally handicapped people in special-ed classes at our school. They’ll never be able to become a doctor and save lives or work on building a…

Also, “mentally handicapped” does not mean “unable to be a productive member of society.”  Even when it does, “unable to be a productive member of society” by the definition of some people does not mean “unperson.”

And also, ‘productive member of society’ is as much of a societal issue as it is an issue with the individual. (See, for instance, every autistic person who’s lost a job for not being able to emulate neurotypical social patterns on a constant basis.)

The entire idea that there are people who by definition are not productive members of a society should be scrapped. It comes from a mentality that equates paid work with worth. Also saying what people “will never do” is usually bullshit. I’ve known people who grew up diagnosed with profound intellectual disabilities who went on to write books and make movies and give speeches and go to college. Not that any one of those things should ever be the measure of how productive someone is. This sort of thing makes me want to vomit. Seriously.
