"Aspie"

transhumanisticpanspermia:

I’m really conflicted about the use of this word.

Every time I’ve heard it used, it’s been a slur, except for maybe one or two exceptions on tumblr.

I’ve always gone though the motions of saying “Asperger’s diagnosee” because I feel like, not only does “aspie” have a common use as a slur, but the word itself sounds immature and playful.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I used to wish I had a diagnosis of AS because ‘aspie’ sounded so much cooler than 'autie’. It reminded me of aspen trees, especially because there was an AS-related organization back then called ASPEN. Oh looks like it still exists. Anyway the word just looked more 'right’ than 'autie’.

Unlike 'autie’, 'aspie’ did not start out as a slur. I’ve been around autistic communities for roughly 14 years (holy crap), and I’ve never once seen aspie used as a slur. Ass-pee maybe, but not aspie.

I use the words autistic or autie the most often, and rarely use aspie, but that’s because I don’t see the autism/AS divide as a valid way to divide autistic people up. So I mostly use it when referencing certain stereotypes specifically associated with AS.  I guess it may sound playful to some people but I don’t know why it would be immature.
