Ok, this has been bothering me, feminist blogs, so listen up.
You talk about intersectionality. Constantly. I see the word pop up on my dash all the time, and that’s great!
But here’s the thing.
If you only focus on one or two areas of…
Agreed with most of this, even of intersectionality is another word that bites my brain. (I’m okay with the various concepts it represents but I hate when people make fancy words for all this crap that then stalls my brain every time I read it.)
Except for this one part. Where it’s supposed to be bad to say able-bodied for nondisabled people. Now I normally use nondisabled anyway, unless my brain throws able-bodied in there. But. Seriously. THE BRAIN IS PART OF THE BODY. And separating it like that and insisting everyone do the same rubs me the wrong way.
Because it forces people to accept a view of the world that not everyone has. And not everyone should have to have.
Also notice that the two things I had a problem with were about language. The first with a word that my brain has serious trouble processing. The second with a word that my brain would have serious trouble eliminating. The first one isn’t really a request to do anything differently though. Because among other things there are likely people whose brains can’t help spitting out words like intersectionality. But the second, yes I’d definitely request that people avoid making judgments about people’s knowledge of disability just because they use the term able-bodied to refer to nondisabled people. Because even things that take place in the brain take place in the body. And because even people who would rather say able-bodied and able-minded will sometimes end up saying able-bodied just because it’s the word their brain spat out right then. And there shouldn’t be anything wrong with that.
(Personally I only say able-minded in specific situations that are hard to describe. But to me that’s a subset of able-bodied, not a different category.)
