Random thought: I wonder what the comorbidity rate of hypermobility and any ASD is?

smartwittyurl:

‘Cause a lot of the folks I know (or have known) who are on the Spectrum are a fairly flexible. Read this as: People I know go from “OHGODS YOU CAN DO WHAT?! WITH YOUR FOOT?” to “…You know? I don’t think it’s naturally supposed to bend that way…” in terms of flexibility.

…And I kinda want to know if it’s just some weird collective quirk of the people I know/knew/follow on Tumblr or something that’s a larger pattern for all autistics/Aspies/PDD-NOS folks…

(And if it is something more associated with ASDs, does ANYONE have any academic sources they can toss my way?)

I don’t fully trust Tony Attwood for many reasons. But I do know he’s at minimum had a ton of experience diagnosing people. And he thinks it’s common enough that if he sees a kid with hypermobility he considers that a sign they may be autistic.

I’m diagnosed with some kind of hypermobility syndrome although they haven’t bothered figuring out which. Some of my joints have actually lost flexibility since then due to hypermobility related joint damage or muscle spasms. I’ve seen people much more flexible than me, but I’m still in a range that freaks out laypeople and causes an “OHMYGODSTOPSTOPSTOP” reaction from professionals. And I have really nasty joint pain, and lots and lots of joint injuries. Among other things.
