One of my favorite critters - the mighty banana slug! Their bright yellow color not only gives them their name, but is an evolutionary adaptation that allows them to look like the long, slender leaves of the bay laurel tree that turn the same shade when dropped.
It used to be common practice at local camps to dare campers to kiss or lick the slugs because their slime creates a tingling, numbing sensation (it’s discouraged now because it can stress the little guys out). Such a fun and still very weird sight when hiking the redwood forests.
