I wish violins weren’t fragile.
Because if il I was this attached to any other object I’d crawl into bed with it. Toy cars just aren’t the same. At least not the ones I own. I don’t really have many objects that go back that far, and none with this many layers of meaning. And even if I did they wouldn’t be this violin that I’m suppressing a strong urge to curl up with it cat-style.
This is one reason I’m so motivated to play it. Besides all the usual creativity stuff. Because I like it and it likes me and I just want to spend time with it. And playing is what violins do with people. Although I also do lots of sensory exploration. But playing ls important too.
I would personally recommend a cheap guitar (or a bass guitar if you like more proprioceptive input when playing). Most solid body electrics can take some abuse and a cheap one won’t cost you more than $100-$150 tops new (less used).
I got a bass recently. It makes my fingers hurt when playing, which is heavenly, honestly. Of course, I pick the freaking hardest Red Hot Chili Peppers songs (“By the Way” That song has so much hard finger-picking).
Thanks, but it’s not a preference based on generally wanting to curl up in bed with an instrument. It’s specifically this instrument because I’ve had a long relationship with it, and it has a specific, intense, deep personality that makes me want to be near it and touch it and spend time with it as much as possible. I’ve had lots of instruments and never this kind of relationship with any of them. (Probably why violin is the only thing I’ve ever been any good at.) Including my previous violins. I don’t mind bass, and was sort of decent at playing really simple stuff on them, but I don’t think I could get attached to one in the same way, unless it had a specific personality and history of its own and liked me for some reason. I can’t play regular guitar at all. My hands don’t work that way. They barely work on violin, and bass was somewhere in between guitar and violin in difficulty hand-wise.
