It doesn’t look much different. But they replaced the strings, the tailpiece, and the chin rest. I’ll go back and have the bridge done at some later point, and probably get another bow after that because apparently parts of it are falling apart or something. And wow. These strings. They are so much easier to play on. And they make it sound like my skill level has jumped up a good deal but it’s really just that I had terrible strings that may have been there since 1960 or something. The woman who did it was amazing. I told her that it was not a fancy violin and that I would never be a professional, but that I wanted to be able to do justice to what this particular violin is capable of. And she told me she wished all their customers said things like that. She helped me find the exact kind of strings I was after. And she changed everything out for me in only fifteen minutes. If this is what my violin sounds like afterwards, they’ve gotten themselves a loyal customer. I can’t believe how easy it is to play either. I was putting a lot of energy before into not making my ratty strings sound horrible. They were also really happy that the violin had an entire story behind it and that it had all the original receipts and everything. She said that usually old instruments they get are so far gone that the price of fixing them is higher than the price to buy a better violin. So she was happy at what good shape it was in. She showed me this beautiful old violin with a scroll shaped like an angry head and other really cool ornamentation on it. And said that they have to just use it as a decoration in the store because it’s not fixable. I am so glad this violin is still good although I would probably keep it forever even if it wasn’t. Anyway I’ll go back to playing now. I just wanted to take a picture before it gets dark.
