Whenever I find the hidden image in a stereogram, it always looks like it was hollowed or carved out of the “background”, not popping out like I’m told it’s supposed to. Basically it’s the complete opposite of “popping out” for me. I dunno if this happens to anyone else.

This happens to me too! I can’t get my eyes to cross in the ‘correct’ direction for stereograms— I can only seem to do it backwards.

Whereas mine go in the correct direction way too easily when there are not even stereograms around – I have mild exotropia. What’s “correct” for stereograms isn’t crossing your eyes at all, it’s making them move away from each other. With my eyes tending in that direction already, looking at repetitive patterns in floor tiles can make really strange things happen.
