And he said “But she can’t be autistic, she’s black.” Of course at our school at least half the autistic people were people of color. Meanwhile, my family has had autistic people as far back as anyone can remember. On both sides. These families have been poor and working-class for as long as we can remember. With the exception of a brief period of getting into the middle class when my brothers and I were growing up… and now we are poor again, and I’m not talking that weird voluntary-fake-poverty thing some people do for reasons I can’t understand. With a few exceptions like the one whose farm had oil discovered under it and suddenly has money. And some branches of my family were mixed-race. And somehow we are all autistic. Well not every single one of us, but significant representation in each generation.
