Wow. I had basically the same reaction as Amanda to this… this makes way too much sense to me. Except possibly having more of the fragmented stuff that’s going on with the trees in other parts of the photo as well.
And yeah, the end effect is much the same, too.
(Not that this really surprises me, of course. We’ve talked over IM in the past about having very similar sensory patterns. But this only further confirms it.)
Yeah, the fragmentation part is a lot more pronounced for me IRL too…I’m going to see if I can find some more neat Photoshop brushes (or GIMP brushes, if I use my desktop linux box next time). The leaves were made using a brush, and while I could conceivably create my own brushes, there are so many out there people have already made. One recent case that particularly sticks in my mind: Several months ago, I crossed a rather busy road without waiting for the light, because I didn’t even notice that there was a pedestrian crossing light there. I thought it was a crosswalk with no signal, where you just cross when safe. (No need to worry; I still made it across safely! One good thing is that even when my visual processing is on the fritz, I can still hear how far away cars are on the road. Not that this is any use in driving, of course.) I literally only noticed the signal being there once it started beeping at me—it’s one of those crossings that’s been made accessible for blind people.
When I try to portray fragmentation – and I want to do another one like this when I get my camera back – I take lots and lots of pictures. Some close up, some far, different angles, pointed different directions, etc. And then I start cutting and pasting stuff into the “layers” function of my graphics program. Then I use varying amounts of transparency both on the layers as a whole and with the eraser. (That thing where you can make the eraser only erase to a certain percentage.) And that at least approximates how things can look. I made one like that ages ago but I think it’s gone.
