News From The Coffee Press: Oh, I hate bugs.

So, I found this site called What’sThatBug.com…. and I wrote them a compelling (read: dramatic girl-freak-out) email asking what species of bug I keep (twice) finding in my new apartment. After I sent it, I realized that they are a PRO-life Bug Site. I obviously cannot relate. But, how can they…

Looks like a house centipede to me (wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutigera_coleoptrata). They’re odd-looking but completely harmless to humans. They eat things like ants, termites, bedbugs, and cockroaches, in fact, so there may be a net benefit to having them around. I wouldn’t mind a few in/around my house, honestly, so long as they stayed out of the bedroom!

This is sort of off-topic. But in that Wikipedia entry, there’s a piece of writing from a 1902 entomologist about these critters:

It may often be seen darting across floors with very great speed, occasionally stopping suddenly and remaining absolutely motionless, presently to resume its rapid movements, often darting directly at inmates of the house, particularly women, evidently with a desire to conceal itself beneath their dresses, and thus creating much consternation.

There’s something that sometimes strikes me as hilarious about writing from that era. This is one of those times.
