My autistic nephew used to be considered nonverbal.  When he started “really” speaking, his first sentences were things like “I’m bad”, “No one is as bad as me”, “I’m autism and that means bad”, “I am for saying bad things to”, et cetera.  He was and is far more aware than given credit for.
