There’s nothing like this and I don’t even know how to explain.
Like when I was a kid and had trouble understanding words.
And for some reason certain lines from a song would stand out more than others. Even with no understanding.
“He needed to rest, but the crowd wouldn’t give.”
And then those lines would carve out these detailed grooves in my brain. With all kinds of shades of meaning, none of which had anything at all to do with language.
And then I find out as an adult that the line occurred in a song about a singer who had sacrificed a lot for his profession. Or… whatever the plot of the song was. (I know some songs don’t have plots. Most country music does.)
And then I’ll hear it. And I’ll hear the words. And understand the words. And understand their context in the song. And that’s great, and I love finding these things out.
And yet all those detailed grooves of meaning are still worn into my brain. And it’s still magical in a way the words can’t touch.
