Assuming you sang “Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg” to the tune of “Jingle Bells” as a kid, did the Joker
a) get away
or
b) take ballet?
Please state what region of the country you are from in addition to your answer.
“Got away” in Northeast Ohio.
Georgia. Never heard it any other way but “got away”.
Combination of central Connecticut and California Bay Area. And I heard versions with both “got away” and “broke his leg.”
(ETA to clarify: I heard “got away” as a kid in the 80s, and “broke his leg” was what I heard some younger kids and cousins singing when I got a little older. Maybe it mutated at some point.)
I heard both broke his leg and got away in the Bay Area in the eighties. No wait. I didn’t. I heard got away. Broke his leg came from the Santa smells variant – Jingle Bells, Santa smells, Rudolph broke his leg.
