Because I want to get outside of that horrible thread about people who can stand up out of wheelchairs not really being disabled. (As if most people faking disability would be stupid enough to stand up out of their chair in public or show any other signs of stereotype violation. They are probably all pretending to have perfectly consistent disabilities and nobody suspects them. Meanwhile all the legitimately disabled people with inconsistent abilities or otherwise violating stereotype, are the ones who get pounced on by people looking for fakers. Yes this pisses me off. Anyway.)
They make canes and walkers with seats on them. I used a walker like that before I used a chair. Also, the use of a cane can be a social signal to other people that you need to sit down NOW. Many disabled people use them partly or even primarily as such. I originally got one because someone told me about that, and only then realized it greatly improved my stamina and reduced falls.
I have hypermobility-induced ankle/leg issues that are really painful. If I stand in one place, there’s searing pain up and down my leg. Same if I’m walking but a lot less usually. A lot of people assume my rocking foot to foot to be autism-related but a lot of it is to keep my legs in motion so they don’t hurt as much. Fortunately in a wheelchair I don’t have to do any of that.
