Every time I see one of those you wouldn’t blame someone for having cancer posts I roll my eyes so hard it hurts because yeah, that definitely doesn’t happen.

The real reason that comparing oppressions never works isn’t because it’s shitty. It’s because um, yes, actually,…

And I’ve actually known people who believe there’s something called a “cancer personality”. Worst, I once got a blog comment from a woman whose family has all kinds of cancer genes and who was adamant that the cancer personality was real because if she avoided it then she wouldn’t get cancer. But in doing so she was imposing horrible bigotry on others including her relatives who got cancer.

People want to believe that all illness and disability is 100% preventable because then they can be immune if they just do all the right things. But their desire to be immune has devastating effects on people who get those things.

Which is why yes people do say these things to people with cancer and every other physical illness or disability.
