As Fey ages…

…I really end up respecting her more and more. Not all people gain wisdom as they age, but she has the sort of wisdom it takes a lifetime to acquire. And it really does seem to have to do with what a lifetime is naturally for your species, not how many years. She’s turning 14 this year, and she’s nothing like a 14-year-old human. She’s a 14-year-old cat. She’s older than me (in terms of species, not number of years) and she KNOWS she’s older and wiser and holds it against me when I don’t appear to respect that. (She sometimes has a real problem when I know something she doesn’t, by virtue of species differences, and thinks that she knows better what’s going on, and gets pissed at me.) But mostly I do respect it, because its evident in nearly everything she does the older she gets. It’s the way she holds herself, and the things I can see going on behind her eyes, and the way she treats me.

It always surprises me when people don’t see or respect this dimension of her personality. It’s just becoming crystal clear as time goes on that she’s one of those people who gains wisdom with age. But so many people see her as almost like a permanent cute kitten. Not that she can’t be cute, but there’s a lot of depth to her that goes well beyond that.

I’d write more but I have a horrible migraine and struggled to write this.
