Herbage: Rockmat (Petrophyton caespitosum), at Walnut Canyon National Monument. Even very early in the morning the light in this side of the canyon was harsh and overbearing. 
Etymology Note: The specific epithet caespitosum is derived from caesepes, Latin for turf or sod. When used in botanical names the term describes plants with dense tufts of basal leaves or stems. It has no etymological relation to this word.
